Whitecaps still winless in new MLS season as Galaxy’s Leerdam helps them earn 1-1 draw

Dignity Health Sports Park, Cal State University, Carson, California

Canada‘s west coast team in Major League Soccer, The Vancouver Whitecaps, still have yet to taste victory in their start to the 2023 season as LA Galaxy’s Kelvin Leerdam scored in first-half stoppage time to help the Los Angeles Galaxy escape with a 1-1 draw on Saturday night.

The goal was unassisted and came after Tristan Blackmon took a pass from Julian Gressel and scored in the 14th minute to give the Whitecaps an early lead.

The Whitecaps snap a streak of four straight road losses. The Whitecaps are 0-5-5 in their last 10 matches away from home. They have just four road wins since the 2021 season. That ties them with the Houston Dynamos and their fellow Canadian east coast team Toronto FC for the fewest in the league.

L.A. outshot Vancouver with a 6-2 advantage in shots on goal.

Jonathan Bond made two saves for the LA Galaxy. Yohei Takaoka stopped four shots for Vancouver.
